This filmed changed my perspective of todays gleaners  
I "gleaned" this French jewel from the shelves of our library DVD collection. And Im glad I did.

This film is rich in texture deep in multiple meanings provides a variety of real characters a visual feast of various regions of France and how the act of gleaning is as alive today as when the famous paintings were made centuries ago.

It has given me a new appreciation for the "scrounging" that I and others I know have done over the years. I think from now on Ill always refer to it as "gleaning."

People and situations will look different to me because Ive seen this film. The gleaners are all around us. Now they are no longer invisible. :2010-09-15 10:01:33

When I was young I would go with my grandparents to my uncles farm to pick fresh vegetables. The main vegetable that I remember picking is okra. Armed with my pocket knife I was informed by my grandmother to only gather the medium sized okra pods because they were the best ones to eat. I was a bit bothered by this because I felt that the other ones would go to waste. I am not sure what my uncle did with remaining vegetables but I assume they were often left to rot in his fields without serving their purpose to feed the populace.

Vardas film The Gleaners and I is a documentary depicting her travels throughout the countryside of France in her pursuit to find individuals who live off of the items cast off by others. Gleaning used to be a normal activity of woman in the countryside who gathered the remaining grain in the fields after the harvest came to an end but this practice almost ceased to be after heavy machi :2010-09-15 10:01:33

While picking through the DVD bins...  
"Le glanage" French for gleaning is more or less of a lost art. The sight of armies of bare-armed peasant women meticulously stripping fields bare after the harvesters have passed is surely a foregone sight limited to romantic paintings of the 18th century.

Or is it?

Film maker Agnes Varda turns her camera lenses toward modern day gleaners--the poor the dispossessed the ecologically aware and the alienated--to paint a new but still somewhat romantic image of those follow along behind the parade of life picking through its remains. TGAI might have become a tiresome anti-consumerist anti-Big Agriculture anti-waste diatribe. But Varda has no illusions that her subjects depend for their very existence on the leavings of modern society and its mechanized agriculture. Indeed even the laws in France extensions of ancient law from an agricultural era are quite friendly toward gleaners. Agnes Varda could have gone the other route and turned up in her own films as an icy chilling presence--all regal and popelike but instead she has made a name for herself as the worlds most loveable clownish senior. While they were alive this was the title that was contested for decades by the previous contenders Giuletta Masina of France and Ruth Gordon of the USA but now it belongs solely to Varda the magnificent scavenger of cinema.

The DVD of The Gleaners and I has some awesome special features among them yet another great documentary : The Gleaners Two Years Later in which Vardamania reaches its zenith. 2YL is largely Vardas follow-up with some of the people she covered in Part One but large sections of it focus on her fan mail and the way people love her. She has changed the lives of millions and this pleases her no end. Varda shows us one anagrammatic mash note in which the writer points out that the French words for gleaner and angelic are anagrams and both are :2010-09-15 10:01:33

Gleanings of Greatness  
What is it about New Wave directors and cats? Rivette Resnais and Marker often feature them prominently and a kitty opens this masterful essay by the "Grandmother" of the New Wave which has plenty of space in its very tightly constructed 80 minutes or so for other shots of the directors beloved companions.

Cats (and dogs) of course are often scavengers both around human companions and left to their own devices and its quite possible that the director is drawing some subtle parallels here between the placid animals and the surprisingly well-adjusted (though probably not placid) humans that scavenge pick and "glean" for their lives conscience and art in this wonderfully multifaceted and wide-ranging exploration of those who take up what society throws away. Shot on hand-held digital video the whole film has an immediacy and street-level appeal but the intellect behind it is anything but cheap or simple.
